The "Gubana" was born as a holiday cake in the Natisone Valleys, to the East of Cividale del Friuli; it is made according to ancient traditions for holidays and family festivities. As a dessert cake it is not linked to a specific season any more, and it has been coupled with vanilla ice creams in summer, with Grappa brandies in winter, and with Ramandolo and Verduzzo wines in spring and autumn.
